A peptide COA is a laboratory's record of what it measured on one submitted sample, and reading one properly takes four checks: who issued it, which tests it covers, whether the chromatogram supports the number, and whether the report code resolves on the lab's own site. Certificate is a misleading word, because nothing on a COA is certified and nothing passed or failed. Here is every field, the ten red flags, and the check that takes a minute.
What a peptide COA actually is
Two very different documents circulate under the same name, and telling them apart is the first move.
A laboratory COA reports measurements an instrument made on a specific sample that arrived on a specific date. A manufacturer COA restates a supplier's own internal specification for the material they say they made. The first is evidence. The second is a claim formatted to look like evidence, and it frequently arrives with no chromatogram at all.

Ten red flags
- A number with no chromatogram. The trace is the evidence, the number is the summary.
- No named method, or the word HPLC with no wavelength and no column class.
- No report number and no verification code anywhere on the page.
- No peak table, or area percentages that do not add up sensibly.
- Precision the method cannot support, such as a purity quoted to two decimal places.
- A molecular weight that does not match the compound named on the same document.
- Dates that break causality: analysed before received, issued before analysed, or dated in the future.
- The same chromatogram, peak for peak, under two different product names.
- A sample name but no lot reference, which makes the report unlinkable to stock.
- A flattened screenshot where the code is unreadable, or PDF metadata naming an image editor as the producer.
Number eight catches more fabrication than the other nine combined, because reusing a trace is the laziest available shortcut and retention times are effectively a fingerprint.
The one minute verification check
- Find the report number and the unique key on the document. If either is missing, stop here.
- Type the laboratory's domain into the address bar yourself. Do not use a verification link printed on the seller's page.
- Enter the code and compare what comes back with the file you were given, field by field.
- Check the sample name, the date and the numeric result all match. A code that resolves to a different result is worse than one that fails.
- If nothing resolves, treat the document as an unsupported claim, however professional it looks.
What a COA cannot tell you
Even a perfect, fully verified report has a fixed boundary. It describes one sample, from one moment, for the tests that were paid for.
- Nothing about the other units in the same lot.
- Nothing about any other lot, before or after.
- Nothing about sterility or endotoxin unless those tests appear on the document.
- Nothing about how many milligrams are in the container unless content testing was ordered.
- Nothing about storage, handling or transport after the sample left.
- Nothing about where the sample came from, which is the gap independent purchase exists to close.
Mistakes to avoid
- Publishing a cropped image. Cropping removes the code and the trace, which are the only two independently checkable things on the page.
- Reusing one COA across a product family. One compound, one lot, one report. Anything else invites the reused trace accusation.
- Quoting purity as a grade. Area percent is a ratio produced by a specific method, not a quality rating.
- Leaving the lot field blank. An orphaned report is decoration, and readers who understand COAs spot it immediately.
- Redacting the lab name. Anonymised reports are treated as fabricated by default, and correctly so.
- Leaving a superseded COA live. When a new lot ships, the old file needs an archive label and a date, not silent deletion.
